Television Distribution/CBS Television DistributionÄavid Fincher loves serial killers. If you love royalist porn or British period dramas like Downton Abbey, this will be like a long, slow massage. Still, The Crown is confident in its soapiness, opulent in every respect, and quite possibly Netflix's best choice for escapism (albeit using a subject that should probably be anything but). If only The Crown would choose its potential storylines as meticulously! Modern audiences would be better served if the showrunners examined the macro geopolitical shifts that have characterized Elizabeth II's long reign-for example, decolonization receives scant attention, but the Great Smog of London merits a multi-episode storyline. (Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies took over for them in Season 3.) Its period costumes are legendary and its sets designed with impeccable attention to detail. The Crown is a well-made (and very expensively made) show, with standout performances in its first two seasons from Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
